More Magazine How To Cope If You Clash With Your Boss…

Have you had a humdinger with your manager?

Follow Michelle’s guide to handling a workplace war…

1 Discreetly speak to other people in the company. Is it just you that’s falling out with your boss? If it is, then it’s probably a personality clash, but if everyone’s in the same boat then at least it’s not personal.

2 Remember only you can control how you react. Getting angry won’t help. One tactic you can avoid conflict is to say: ‘I see your point of view. Can we talk about this later at X time?’ That way you will give them time to calm down and the option to resolve it later.

3 Work out what’s causing the conflict. Is it deadlines? Is it how he/she gives feedback? Approach them and explain that, although you have a difference of opinion, you’d like to reach a compromise.

4 If you have a really dramatic personally clash, you might have to ask yourself whether it’s time to move on. Could you shift departments or start looking elsewhere for a post?
