This week: ‘Do you want my Job?’
Tony Wilmot of staffbay.com explains how to handle that curveball
WHY DO THEY ASK THIS?
The interviewer will ask this as a way of gauging aspiration. It’s a very difficult question to answer, and the interviewer knows this. If you appear to be too enthusiastic, you can come across as over-confident or arrogant. On the other hand, if you don’t show any interest, then it looks like you aren’t very aspirational.
HOW DO YOU ANSWER?
You have to seem smart and try to divert the conversation a little. You should mention that at some point in the future you’d like to have the skills and experience to fill your interviewer’s role, and that you will do everything you can to work towards that. it’s all about creating a sense of anticipation about how hard you’re going to work, rather than saying you expect to nab that top job straight away.
