Jo Watson, 32, is a merchandising manager for The Perfume Shop
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE?
I monitor and predict The Perfume Shop’s overall sales trends. I work out which products to buy, how many of them, and in which stores we should stock them, in order to drive up sales.
WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN HIRING NEW STAFF MEMBERS?
If you’re a school leaver or graduate then any retail experience, including stock room and shop floor, is an advantage. You shouldn’t be fazed by numbers, but you don’t need to be a maths geek.
WHAT IMPRESSES YOU AT AN INTERVIEW?
Knowledge about the firm. If you’re going for a job at a retail company’s head office, for example, visit a couple of stores and prepare feedback on what you think was good and what could be done better. Don’t be afraid to share your honest and constructive opinion.
WHAT’S YOUR TOP TIP FOR FITTING IN AT A WORKPLACE?
Don’t try to be someone you’re not. A great team is made up of lot’s of different kinds of people. Focus on your OWN development and being brilliant, because that’s what will make you stand out from the crowd.
WHAT’S THE BEST CAREER ADVICE SOMEBODY HAS GIVEN YOU?
Don’t be afraid to ask someone to show you what to do if you don’t understand. You learn by doing – no matter how long you’ve been in a job. Visit theperfumeshopjobs.com
