Friday 20th December

Today was the day after the Christmas work party and I have to say I had such a good time it was nice to see work colleagues outside of the office environment as you can get to know editors and other colleagues that tiny bit more. Needless to say the office was very quiet today, I got in and carried on with typing up the entries one more day and I should be finished.

I also went and spoke to one of the managers to see if I would be allowed to interview 2 people in the office for one of my essay’s. For this essay in order to pass we have to interview 2 people in the media industry which allows us to network and communicate with people within the industry. We also get to decide the title of our essay, I’m looking at how in the economy and jobs available to graduates today we might have to settle for something less than our dream job. I want to look at job positions such as a receptionist or a PA in a media industry and how it can allow you to learn skills that can be transferred to a job title of your choice. I want to state that I tried to be as careful as I could about wording what I am doing for this essay, I am not for one instance saying that a job such as a PA or a receptionist is not worthwhile its simply not the career that I want to do but if there is a position available in a media industry similar to a PA or a receptionist I would take it in order to be in an media environment to progress.

I was very proud of myself that I actually went and spoke to one of the managers I remember when I first joined I was terrified of speaking to anyone from senior management. I also asked advice on how I should go about getting my name out there a bit more, the manager gave me some advice and showed a few websites that are useful to use, check out the Useful Links page for updates.

Have a good weekend, see you on Monday.

You might remember my previous post My summer decision…Dissertation where I discussed what I was thinking of doing my dissertation on. Last week I was allocated my dissertation supervisor, we had a lesson where all of the students that he was going to overlook were present so that he could go over, dos, don’ts and tips on how to get us started. Following that lesson he then gave us a sign up sheet so that he could meet us one to one.

When I went to my appointment I was discussing how I wanted to really look at the concept of hash tagging by using Instagram but due to the lack of research I decided to look at how Google uses hash tagging. My supervisor told me that its quite a broad subject and I need to choose a more detailed area to focus on too. He then went on to say that looking at keywords is more focused towards what physics and mathematician students would study. I left feeling more unsure than I was before, back to square one and felt that I had to start again.

One of the things that I love about my group is I have a class mate who’s borderline as crazy as me… so its pretty understandable that were quite close and get on really well. We also tend to have library dates where we say we’ll meet up to do work but really spend 95% of the time gossiping, (going slightly off track I know). Anyway I said to him, ‘Seeing as we have so much work to do shall we have a massive library day?’ So we met up and I was telling him how I was slightly stressed as I don’t know what to do for my dissertation. He was showing me how he got inspired and how he reached his focus point for his dissertation by drawing a simple spider diagram and to constantly branch off until he got to what he felt was a good idea to work from.

Bless him, I must admit he did help me a lot so I was telling him how I really want to look at the concept of hash tagging didn’t know how to focus it down. I then somehow got inspired and had like an epiphany shall we say, once I got my idea I wrote it down, before I forgot it obviously! I then started to look for journals and research to get me started and my class mate helped me out by looking up journals that could be of use to me.

I’m so excited as now I have finally decided what to do and my new title is…

‘How do brands use business strategies to incorporate the concept of hash tagging in order to become bigger’

Time to open Microsoft word and get started… 10,000 words left :/!

A new perspective

In the last week and a half at university I’ve had a bit of a rough time 😦 Last Wednesday it was my first Bloggers Society meeting and life decided to slam another door in my face! No one turned up to my meeting apart from one girl who is still really interested but I’m going to try and not give up on this, I really wanted to be able to say, ‘I created my something during my time at university.’ I’m going to see if I can get an extension to get the minimum of 5 people interested. I’m really determined to create a society where people are happy, they want to come, share their opinions, hobbies via a blog and ultimately meet new people that WILL become new friends.

If I really can’t get this society started then I will have to give up on it:(, I really hope it doesn’t come to that. Hopefully this isn’t the last blog post for my society although I always said to myself if it didn’t work to join the university newspaper so I’ve joined that too so you know what they say, ‘When life closes a door another one opens.’

I’ve also been taking a module called Media Business and I’ll be brutally honest I’m not the most intelligent person you can come across, I have been finding this module to start off with really hard so I’ve decided to start making spider diagrams to really help me as shown in the picture below it’s quite helpful when I’ve simplified it all so I can keep looking back on it constantly.

Media Business

I need to succeed this year I cannot fail myself because in 9 months when I throw my graduation hat up in the air and I’ve graduated I want to make my parents proud and most of all be proud of myself for changing myself to be the best that I can be and setting myself up to start a career that I’ve dreamed off since I was 6 years old!

I need to try at least!

Brand Yourself

I am so proud of myself

Yesterday I went to my lecture and it was for my module ‘Professional Practice & Creative Industries.’This lecture was about building myself as an online brand and starting our blogs. I was really excited for this lesson to see what we had to do and if there were any more improvements that I could take into consideration and act upon… surprise surprise there were! This means I have some improvements to make but don’t worry any changes that I make, I will update you.

The lecture’s focus was on how to brand yourself online and it sounded strange to think of yourself as a brand but then I started to think of the big names such as, ‘The Murdoch Empire.’ Rupert Murdoch is a person with a regular name like me and you BUT by using the concept of branding and branding himself, he made it big! To get into the media industry you really do need to take advantage of the tools around you…

This post WILL help you get started, regardless of what industry you want to go in, everyone finds everything on the internet, the question is, ‘Will your brand be there?!’ So whether your a baker, a photographer or a fisherman use the internet to brand yourself online! Although this post is mainly focused towards branding yourself for a media industry it can be applied to any other industry that use the internet and social media to their advantage to get their business recognised. To start off with, here are a few starting points on how to brand yourself…

The key is to always look and stay the same, for example MacDonald’s uses Ronald MacDonald as their brand and have never changed that figure.
-Always use your name
-Try to use the same online username for every account you create, if it is already taken do not add a number instead add your profession, if my name was taken I would choose something along the lines of ‘rosaaversawriter’
-On any online accounts that you create try to always use the same profile picture so that when someone comes across your brand its looks professional

We all had msn when we were younger and made up a silly email instead of using our name, but let’s be honest if you put down on your CV, no one would hire you, especially in a media industry it’s always about being 100% professional. When thinking of your brand you need to remember that your name is your brand, therefore you want your brand to appear professional. I’ve said it before in a previous post but, ‘IMAGE IS KEY’. A tip so that you don’t confuse your personal life with your work life is to keep them separate and have two separate email accounts. With almost everyone having a smart phone/device it’s easy to keep up to date with opportunities, your work and personal life on the go via email especially as you can connect it to your phone.

Again as I have mentioned before with social networks such as Facebook & Twitter you need to be careful about what you post, such as I like to keep my personal life private in the sense that if I don’t know you I won’t accept you on Facebook, you can also set your page to private via your settings. However I like to keep my Twitter public so if you want to follow me you are more than welcome. However a wise thing to do is to spend a few hours simply going through your social media accounts as employers now like to Google future employees, think to yourself if you were a CEO/Employer would you be impressed, more likely to hire yourself or not? My advice is simple if you are in doubt get rid of it! Your brand online could be costing you that job that you can’t understand why you didn’t get it if your perfectly qualified for it. Again, ‘IMAGE IS KEY’!

As Twitter is public you need to be extra careful with what you post as thousands of professionals use Twitter, think of it as your competition is on this network, how can you be different?! Remember to use all media professionally, when a friend mentions you in a comment respond to them privately so that your big plans for the weekend are not all over your feed. Make sure to follow as many professionals as you can within the industry that you want to go in and interact with others, share your opinion, if you use Twitter right it can bring many advantages.

LinkedIn is a very useful website to use, it’s use is purely professional, for those of you that don’t use social networks at all you need to be on LinkedIn at least to create your brand. This social network is very useful as you can search for jobs within your industry sector, add other people you have been in business with and best of all your CV is public and easily searchable. For those of you yet to discover LinkedIn sign up to it ASAP it could land you your dream job!

Everyone has something in common with another person but to become a brand YOU have to be different, you need to have a unique selling point (USP) which makes you different from someone else. Most people will know that an industry like the one that I really want to get into is extremely difficult so you need to be eager, intelligent and know your industry. The internet is an amazing tool so use it to your advantage to find out as much information as you can. Now that I have started this module, I don’t think that this blog will be enough to set me apart now that it is compulsory for all the people on my course to have a blog similar to mine in order to pass this module. As Kid President says, ‘What will you create that will make the world awesome?’

One of my favourite things about social media is that most of your social networks can be connected to one another, for instance when I blog this post it will instantly be posted on my Twitter feed, LinkedIn profile and Tumblr account at the expense of a click. Make sure to keep all of your accounts connected so that your brand can grow and reach a bigger audience than you can possible imagine.

Writing about yourself is the best way a person can sell their brand across the internet, my teacher referenced this blog site
(This website is focused more towards people wanting to go into the Media/Journalist industry.) which is amazing, it’s filled with tips on how to write about yourself and how your bio can have an impact on your brand. Make sure you check it out for tips that could be of use to you, especially as Twitter has a limited amount of characters try to maximise the limited space available. When branding yourself online make sure that the image you want to sell is reliable and professional, try to select a professional photo as your choice of profile picture.

It’s strange but I never realised I did this too until my lecturer pointed this out yesterday but it’s quite common for people to forget to update/put their contact details on their social networks. For example would you have known where to find my contact details? Either put them in your about me page or have a page dedicated on how to contact you. A good tip is to mention your email in posts now and again, just to put it out there my email is you can find my contact details on my Online CV page.

-Although your Facebook page may be private if you have 1000 friends that means over 1000 people can view your page and friends of friends can use your friends Facebook to view your page so you may want to really think about who you want to keep on your Facebook page.
-As it is a social media account remember you are there to interact so think through your privacy settings.

When I was in the lecture and my teacher was discussing all of the above I thought to myself, ‘Why am I here? He’s pretty much repeating everything I do already’ Most of the tips in this post have been written about in detail beforehand and have been posted on separate occasions, if you would like to find out more on a certain subject, you can search it, check out the  tips category  for all the tips available or you can comment below if there is a certain subject that you would like advice on and I will dedicate a post for you. Now that I have reiterated most of  the tips that I have previously given and used the extra ones from my lecture notes, there is only one thing left to say…

What are you waiting for?!

Media Obsessed

So I have taken a module called Media Business and one the assignments is called, ‘Participation’. For this assignment our lecturer wants to see us ‘Participate’ in lessons and Participate on our Facebook Page Media Business so that we don’t fail!! She showed us the below link about Bebo making a comeback!

I’m excited for this I might actually make an account and join, if I’m honest the only reason why I still haven’t deactivated my Facebook is because of university, loads of our announcements are on Facebook and I run my blogger society via Facebook too! So for the moment I’m stuck with it…

I really am such a Media Fanatic, at my work experience the PA sent me the link below as she knows I’m really into media and social networking!

For this module I really need to get stuck in and read a lot about Media Businesses so I have something worth discussing in class to count towards my participation assessment and not come and discuss it here after I’ve thought about how excited I really am to study this module.

My Modules

This year, I don’t know why but it feels like everything is going to be good:)! Although in my first lecture my teachers already gave us a sheet to fill in about our dissertation followed by a number of other things. I’m really excited for next week as that’s when hardcore studying will begin! My modules this year are amazing, I’m taking International Media, Media Business, Creative Industries & Professional Practice, Dissertation in Media and Cultural Studies & Masculinities, Media & Culture (I’m not as keen on this module as it was the only one I preferred to the other one left, although this may turn out to be a really good one, it’s not started yet so we will see…)

My favourite module has to be Creative Industries & Professional Practice the thing I love about this module is that we get to have CV workshops, we have to look for work experience and write everything we do onto a blog, the good thing is that I already have an advantage on this as I do it already so it will be interesting to see the improvements that I can make. We also have a major project to work on and to create our portfolio’s, the work load this year is going to be massive but I can’t wait to take it all on and tackle it bit by bit, I hope that when I graduate with all the experience & knowledge I will have gained from the last 3 years I will be employed straight away. I can’t wait to start making a name for myself and working hard towards an amazing career…

Here’s to enjoying my last year of university & enjoying being lifeisfunbeingme
