Wednesday 5th March

Today is the first day of lent and this year I have decided to actually try and commit to the things I have given up this year, I’ve chosen to give up my alarm snoozes, diet coke, chocolate & cheese… my favourite things in the whole world! If you know me personally you would know that if it was possible I would actually live in a chocolate house, I think I rarely go a day without chocolate, I just cannot resist it! At my placement, for me personally it is impossible to go into work with the mindset to say, ‘I’m starting a diet and keeping to it!’ There are chocolate treats everywhere… Ahhh! Usually if its someone’s birthday or someone has something to celebrate they tend to bring in some treats, leave them in the kitchen and send an email round to say, ‘There are cake is in the kitchen, help yourself!’ How can you not resist?!

tumblr_lwqvoyUPTl1qdei8m

I’m ashamed to admit but I’ve cracked already 😦

Today has been crazy…Wow, it has literally been non-stop!

I collected the Special Delivery and Recorded post books from downstairs and made my way up to the office, once I got in I hung up my coat, tucked my bag under the desk and went straight to the kitchen to get myself a drink of water ready for when I’m answering calls. I gave the kitchen a quick tidy, filled the coffee jars, emptied and re-filled the dishwasher with dirty breakfast plates and went back to my desk to open up ICAL to see what to expect from the working day…

Today is going to be a long one… there is so much to do… Yay, I really do think I have become a slight workaholic! I have to prep two meetings, I actually quite enjoy having to do this, making sure everything is presentable, aligned and perfect! I also remembered that I forgot to give back one of the birthday cards back to the PA so that she could post it so that our birthday wishes would arrive on time. Luckily the PA remembered and managed to post it.

ICAL says to do a stationary order for the office and one of the editors asked me if I could order a year diary for them. I’m slightly nervous as I don’t know how to do this, I’ve never done it before…

I am bouncing off adrenaline today…

My reception tasks today were:
– Count competitions… Why do people enter them?! Being the one counting them, makes me not enter them anywhere just because I know how minuscule it is to be chosen as a winner there are just so many entries and because I know there will be someone like me also counting competitions. Once competitions were counted I updated the entries in the competition folder.
– Book meeting rooms
– Answer calls & pass on messages
– Hand birthday cards back to the PA
– Hand out & sign for packages

– Hand out post
– Greet visitors… however today I made a silly mistake whenever visitors come into the office the first thing I do is ask them if they would like a drink but today I gave them the wrong cup to drink from as opposed to getting the nice shiny newer glasses… presentation is key!
– Ring concierge again about a leak in one of the toilets

– Pass on any issues relating to magazine subscriptions to the relevant editor who is in charge of the magazine
– Clear out the boarding room
– Clean up the kitchen & fill up  coffee jars again

AND FINALLY I CAN BREATHE…

The pace of the day has finally slowed down a bit and now have all afternoon to do some uni work, hopefully… fingers crossed!

– The PA asked me if I could sort through the paper left by the printer and send out an email asking everyone to collect what they have printed out otherwise it will have to go in the recycling.  She also said to me, ‘feel free to listen to some music whilst doing it.’  I have currently been listening to this on repeat its amazing!!!

After lunch…
– The reminder for the office order came up and as I don’t know how to do it and the PA didn’t have time to show me she said to not worry about it as it can wait
– Empty and refill dishwasher
– Frank and send out post
– Food shop, this involves me making sure there are no essentials missing from the kitchen such as tissues, coffee, tea, dishwasher tabs etc.
– Bind some documents
– Fill the photocopier with paper, stock up the paper cupboard and email the editor in charge of ordering paper to order more.

Last but not least… I also got the chance to do some transcribing, something which I have never done before… I love doing new things at my placements it always makes me feel so positive, the piece of audio that I had to transcribe was 10 minutes long and  in relation to mobile technology. For me it was very inspiring and interesting to listen too, as in some ways it was very similar to the talk I posted about and had some great information for my dissertation.

Finally its home time, I cannot wait to put my feet upNope I managed to get no uni work done 😦

Yawn… see you tomorrow!

Monday 3rd February

Hey I’m back,

Its time for part 2 of this project, this morning I got in and carried on with finishing off my editorial ideas, my personal aim for today is to finish all my feature ideas in time for some feedback. I find it takes a lot of time to work on a pitch especially as I have repeatedly stated its hard to get in the mindset of a target audience who is a lot older than me. I know that I may come across that I have moaned since the start of this project by saying its tough and its hard BUT I would like to point out that I am not giving up and am putting in 100%, this pitch has proven to be a real challenge and it is the first piece of real work I have had to do so of course its not going to be plain sailing, life will always be a massive roller coaster full of ups and downs.

I’m glad my placement gave me a project as big as this to do by myself because I feel having a real taste of something that you truly want to do helps you with your expectation, gives you a real sense of the working world and knowledge on how hard something can be so that in the future I don’t end up going into a career, quitting or giving up because I found it too hard, didn’t like it or not at all what I expected. I can say I kept at it, although challenging and pursued it instead. I remember being told that when I did my GCSE’s they would be the easiest part of my education and that A-levels would a step harder, university would be 10x harder and then putting all that knowledge into real life is even tougher especially when I’m studying a theory based course. So this week so far have made me learn a lot about myself that I can keep going and although I do feel like giving up because it would be EASIER, I’m not I’m carrying on.

Although I find this project so challenging, I am really enjoying it because its pushing me to think outside the box, to be inventive, creative and push myself to produce the best piece of work that I possibly can. I have to always remember that I am working for someone else and not only does this have to be accepted by the client but I have to maintain my placements standard, I have to prove myself, show that I am a creative and a slight perfectionist.

Today I managed to have a meeting with Editor 2 and receive some feedback on my progress so far, it was exciting for me to finally be part of the other side – Editorial. Sometimes I walk past the meeting rooms and see editors discussing with their note books and mood boards and I feel envious that I’m not in there too. The meeting went very well as I managed to receive plenty of tips, Editor 2 was pleased with initial ideas for my feature but suggested that I expanded on them.

Today sounds like I’ve pretty much lounged around because before I knew it, it was 5:30 and I managed to complete 6 slides but I blame F.A.C.E & Keynote, I did try to complete all my feature ideas so that tomorrow I can focus on the outer concepts such as audience, magazine role etc. Keynote, seriously is one time consuming software as well as making sure that everything I have written is geared towards the client. It’s also picking the right picture to liven up the slide which is where media language then comes in along with its denotation and connotation. I will say this, after using keynote you become a perfectionist it will even make you start aligning your bedroom.

Wednesday 22nd January

Today I got in and caught up with the editor who has set me this task, I will state that in this project two editors are overlooking what I am doing so I have been able to get advice and input from two different editors. Due to confidentiality and their social media policy I cannot state names and clients so to make it clear for YOU, THE READER I will name the editor who set me the task as Editor 1 (original I know!) & the editor who advice’s me when editor 1 isn’t available or is not in the office as she is part time as editor 2. Now that this makes sense and its clear we can unravel how my day went and what I have worked on.

This morning I had a meeting with editor 1 to show her what I had worked on yesterday, I created a word document of the research I have found and divided it into different categories so I know which part belongs where and which slide I can paste the information on. I’m still finding it hard to get to grasp with when doing anything to keep in mind that my audience is 55+ as all content is to target them. Looking through my research document that I worked on yesterday I decide to work on the social media section first and work from the outside in as I find this part the easiest because I understand the use of social media being a massive addict myself and using it in my spare time. I feel that once I have completed this part of the presentation the rest of my research will fall in place.

I took the opportunity to talk to the social media manager and see how I could analyse the magazines online content in order to look for improvements. She suggested a few websites that she uses in her work too where you can analyse tweets and see how many Twitter users a tweet can reach. These websites were very useful in finding how well their content on Twitter was doing,  I’ve also uploaded the links to the Useful links page 🙂
http://topsy.com
http://socialmention.com
http://tweetreach.com/

Topsy analytic’s was the most useful because it has access to Twitters entire database, I remember when I was younger I never understood the point in surveys I would always think how is my information really going to help you? Now that I have analysed data from doing competition entries and trying to figure out how successful this Twitter page is for this project, I understand the importance of how thousands of tweets together can prove to make very important statistics in order to say these are the statistics and this is what they show.  Topsy analytic’s has also been in the news recently because Apple have bought social media data analytics firm, Topsy Labs, which specialises in using data from Twitter to track customer sentiment.

For the Twitter section I have 7 slides to fill so far the titles are:
– Twitter
– Companies Twitter Feed
– Statistics Twitters Demographic
– #Hashtag
– Twitter Findings
– Improvements
– Social Media Audience

I started by looking at the company’s Twitter page and had a read through of their tweets for 5-10 minutes to get an idea of the content that they uploaded. I then pulled out a few tweets that were worth discussing and mentioned how their content online differs to the content in the magazine and that the company is clearly trying to increase its brand awareness by thanking followers for following, re-tweets and mentions. I then went on to look at Twitter demographic to establish the average age of Twitter users and found that 67% were 34 and below and of that statistic 28% were below the ages of 25 whereas only 33% are above the ages of 35.

Using Topsy analytics to establish how many Twitter users use the hash tag that the company’s posts on their Twitter page was very low in comparison to words that those of Twitter users below the age of 34  would use for example #Job was used 1,377,521 in the last 30 days. I came to the conclusion that the company’s choice of hash tags could be one of the reasons as to why its not increasing its brand awareness, as statistics showed that Twitter is used by people of a young age and the target audience that I had to bear in mind was a lot older this means that the company’s online content could be going to waste due to it not reaching its target audience. In order to improve this I suggested that the company could target different audiences via their multi-platforms in order to reach the maximum possible audience.

In short, I spent all day on the Twitter section but I felt that I accomplished nothing as I only managed to complete 7 slides as KeyNote is very time consuming, also I found when making a KeyNote document you only write up what is essential so that you have squeezed out the most important information from the research you have done as you have to remember when pitching to future clients you want to keep them engaged in order for it to be a success. I like to think of it as if I’m tweeting for each slide so I’m writing the key words that I think need to be mentioned. This is partly the reason as to why I feel I don’t have much to show for what I have done because the slides are simple and to the point.

See you tomorrow…

Introducing my blogger society

I’ve been working hard at trying to get my society up and running and It takes so much organisation, determination and responsibility to create a society yourself. So far this is what I have done…

-I have created a Facebook group page for all members of the society to join, this way it’s much easier to keep in touch and organise meetings and events within the society. Members can also post any issues they have and what they’re working on so I always have an overview on what’s happening in my society.

-Secondly I made contact with all the members that signed up at the bloggers society and emailed them the following with a proposal. (Please note part of the email and proposal may have some blanks due to me not wanting to share my private details and information about the university I attend.)

This was the email everyone received from me…

Email Sent

This is the attachment attached to each email that I wanted each member to read before our first meeting…

Proposal

In the meantime while I waited for responses I made this leaflet to try and recruit more people for the society and stuck it around university…

leaflet

When the day for the meeting arrived, I also had to go to the constitution meeting beforehand where I would learn what being ‘Chair Person’ of a society meant and it was really good fun BUT it does entail a lot of responsibility. One exercise that the committee made us do was to imagine that we couldn’t run our society for a week and choose a Disney character that you would like to run it on your behalf. I chose Flick from Bug’s Life because when the ant hill was in trouble, he stepped in and ran it.

After the constitution meeting, it was time for my first bloggers meeting where I was really excited to share my ideas, see what the other members wanted out of this society and ultimately start to create the blog, decide on a name and layout. Hopefully all this hard work will start to pay off… Eeekk:)!

Monday 29th July

Today was such a good day…

I Got in, had a catch up with the receptionist as she is now back for the week and I am back onto competition data entry, however it took me 10 minutes to open the document as the computer I was using converted it to numbers! I hate this programme, its so slow!

Today I went for it, if you don’t ask you will never get! I seen the editor who I was working with for the promotion whilst she had a spare minute and asked her for feedback about my writing as although I thought the emails were good she always updated them with tweeks before confirming to me that they were ok to send. Because she tweeked them, this time it didn’t discourage me, in fact it encouraged me to understand where I was going wrong. One thing she did say was as I dealt with it by myself on Friday, she said to handover a conclusion to her so that she knew at what stage the promotion was at so I sent her an email with the updates. (On my part it was stupid not to think of this or even see that common knowledge would say to do this) She said that writing professionally just comes with practice but she did say to perhaps think of taking a creative writing seminar course although expensive, it would look incredibly good on my CV. As the PA would maybe know any contacts with this she said she would look into it for me and also gave me a very good website as a starting point within my city, which I will check out!

I aspire to reach the top of work hierarchy like my CEO at my placement and today I finally got my chance to ask her about how she got to where she is. I see her as being the ultimate student as, as soon as she finished university she got a job straight away and said to  me as I’m interested in the editorial side of the magazine to ask the editors to do a try out piece. This would be such an achievement for me if I write it and they were to like it!

Extra Tasks:

I helped with handing out post as the receptionist was busy due to catching up on her emails etc

I had to re-print a document for the finance director which involved scanning it, printing it,  binding it and emailing it over as a PDF.

I also emailed the PA my holiday dates in which I won’t be available during September as I’m going on holiday… yay!

Thursday 25th July

Today was crazy busy, sometimes I’m not that good with dealing with stress, especially lately as outside of work life is getting a bit too much:(… if I was in an interview I would use this as a weakness to discuss and that every time I come across a stressful situation I try to deal with it a bit better. When I was studying my A-levels, my photography teacher taught me a method… which is simply writing a list if I organise my thoughts and go through them one by one I calm down as I can see myself getting them done.

As I said, as I was so busy I hardly did any competition entries today, luckily I’m in all next week and should be able to finish them all…

Today, editors were throwing me tasks left, right & centre! On top of that I had to also run reception…

Today’s work day consisted of…

– Writing up all magazine  contacts in an excel document and divided them in columns by Forename, Surname, Email & Magazine publication they belong to

-Handed out post

-Counted competition entries that arrived today

-Prepped a meeting room but the client then cancelled

-Tidied the meeting room

-Keep the kitchen tidy

-Put on & empty the dishwasher

-Frank & send off post

-Office recycling

-The majority of today consisted of following up with this promo as I was the middle man in all of this as I had to email the competition winner to then email the editor and then email over to the supplier so it was a bit of criss cross today and will have to finish this task tomorrow. Hopefully it won’t take too long so that I can get back to the competition data entry. Doing this task and working with the editor was a bit of an eye opener for me as it kind of showed me that I really need to improve the standard of my writing. As I was given the ok to deal with this promo I emailed the competition winner and the editor was a bit annoyed as she wanted me to send her what I was going to email for approval. Everytime I emailed her a response she would email back an edited version. I think on Monday I will ask her for some writing advice as she once told me she did a photography degree and is now an editor and it would be interesting to see how adapted the transition from taking photos to simply writing. A good thing about this is that I can put it on my CV yayyy…

Last but not least, last night I went to a bloggers lounge event and met the celebrity star Lydia Bright from TOWIE. I was buzzing afterwards my adrenaline was going and I wrote loads of brainstorming ideas down as it was late when I wanted to write it all up. So I’m going to be working on those posts on my main blog from now until Sunday so do check them out on www.lifeisfunbeingme.wordpress.com It got me thinking that none of this would be possible if it wasn’t for the PA at my placement as she gave me the chance to come in to do work experience and for that I owe her so much! I have never said thank you properly, I’m a bit disappointed in myself and can’t believe that it took me so long to do. However I bought her a bunch of flowers and a thank you card, it was so nice as she really liked them, it’s such a good feeling when you put a smile on someones face 🙂

See you tomorrow.

Tuesday 2nd July

Today once I got myself my water, I sat down at reception and went through the emails to see if any had to be forwarded to relevant editors, once done that I then got into reception mode and followed through my duties for the day…
Today’s tasks entailed:

-Answering the phones (Obviously)

-Counting Competitions

-Signed for parcels that were being delivered

-Handing out post

-Booked meeting rooms

-I continued to carry on with the picture desk task to see if I could grasp the concept of how to research a picture good enough for a front cover photo, however I found this to be very hard and time consuming.

-I Made a tea for the CEO when she was in a meeting

-Emptied the dishwasher

-Tidied the kitchen

-Sorted out the PA’s list of receipt expenses which required me to organise and file them in date order

-I then called the dry cleaners to come and get the sofa covers cleaned as we had replaced them in reception

-Franked & sent out today’s post,  I did remember to double check all the addresses to make sure I made no more mistakes and Guess what there was a parcel going overseas and I franked it right yayy 🙂

Finally the day has come to an end and it’s my last day of covering for reception so until next time…

Yours Truly,
Work Experience Girl
