Wednesday 12th March

This morning on my way to work, I stopped off in Boots to buy some Leminsip & A-Z Vitamins due to have woken up with a cold, I know some of you may say, ‘It’s only a cold, man up!’ BUT I have a weaker immune system to others due to being diabetic so when I catch one I tend to be very ill so I’m doing all I can to tackle this. When I cover reception my job title within my placement becomes, ‘front of house’ as I am representing my placement I cannot and will not be all fluey when answering calls to clients!

Not how I really imagined my morning to be…

Once I arrived in the office I made sure all meeting rooms were tidy, filled the coffee jars, gave the kitchen a general tidy and made sure that the dishwasher was empty ready to be filled with breakfast plates… I then switched on my computer opened ICAL & emails. Today is fairly uneventful apart from having to prep a meeting room at 12 for a job interview which is good news for me as that means I can write up a lot of my dissertation up until 3 o’clock as the day is suggested to then become slightly busy. Time to get stuck with in with some uni work…

In between writing up my dissertation I had to…
– Sign & hand out parcels

– Hand out post
– Count competitions
– Book meeting rooms
– Prep meeting rooms for job interviews
– Put paper delivery away

As much as I tried my best to resist until the end of the day, I do not feel well at all even after taking 2 lemsips as well as taking A-Z vitamins and drinking a glass fresh orange juice to try and make myself feel better. I feel annoyed with myself that I had to leave and go home, I feel like I slightly let my placement down especially with leaving them without a receptionist.

I’m sorry, see you soon…

Thursday 5th December

This morning once I got in I had to change computers when I started to type up the competition entries the software was really slow to start off with which set me back a bit so I called the technician to help, once he fixed the problem I was able to carry on with typing up the data entry. The PA also asked for some help to do some more client gift packaging, when it got to 5:30 I was getting ready to go home when the PA asked me if I was free Thursday 19th December I assumed it was to work however the PA invited me to this year Christmas work party, I am so excited for it, it gives me even more of an excuse to go shopping… yay:)

See you tomorrow.

Wednesday 28th August

So today once I got in I was updated with what I had to do followed by the receptionist asking me to go and buy orange juice cartons for 2 meetings as they had 2 big clients in meetings have to be perfect presentation says it all. After my quick walk to the shops I sat down at my allocated desk ready to start my task, what I had to do today was go through all the issues the magazine I was working with had published and look for the success stories featured inside. I then had to get the PDF’s off the server copy them into a folder and then name them accordingly. Once I had finished that I then had to burn the files on a DVD. (However I would like to point that the editor did this as I didn’t know how to do it.) Once the files were burnt onto the disk I popped it into a case put the case into an envelope, franked it and wrote the address to the client it had to be sent to. You won’t believe it but I drank my first tea today… I wasn’t feeling too well and the receptionist suggested to have a fennel tea, it tasted delicious… mmm I might end up become a tea addict… Oops!

– I also helped out with emptying the dishwasher this morning as the receptionist was slightly stressed so seeing as I do generally assist all parts of the office I gave her a helping hand.

I also went to the bank to change up some money for the finance department

As I finished my task early I then did some editorial research for the magazine I was working on, followed by looking at the promotions that other magazines do to contrast and compare the competitions against other magazines.

I’m really excited for tomorrow, as today I was looking through my placement’s photo albums outside of work to select pictures of one editor as it’s her leaving do so we needed to collate pictures of her to send over to another editor so that he could make the card… I’m also excited to be able to go the leaving do party tomorrow, I always enjoy things like these cause you can get to know the people you work with a bit more out of the work zone 🙂

Wednesday 31st July

As soon as I arrived once again I got myself my water and threw myself straight into working mode as I have so much data entry left to do…

The CEO asked me to buy her some pretend medals today when I had the time as tomorrow the office is going on an away day which I imagine is where they build up on team working exercises and similar things like that. As I am just a work experience girl I am not going therefore I am covering the phones for the day. I barely had a lunch break as none of the shops near the office sold fake medals so I had to walk into the centre and try a fancy dress shop, luckily they had them!

Back to comps if I have no more distractions I should get loads done today!

I’m a work experience girl so the following task was given to do…

-Kitchen Shop

At the end of the day I then went over tomorrow’s schedule with the PA as I’ll be one of the employees in the office along with one of the freelancers. I’m so glad that the PA said I can park in the garage which means I don’t have to stress with looking for a car parking space in the morning! Yay :)!

I’m finally in the 3000’s with the data entry, I never thought I would see this day come…. 1000 left!

I would like to mention that I am feeling incredibly happy with my work placement, it’s such a fantastic place! I’m feeling really positive as I’ve really got out there and asked editors to be involved a bit more. Part of the reason is that I’ve been able to join in with a bit of the office banter as well as I’m not sat in the reception area which is a bit secluded from the rest of the office making the day that bit more enjoyable!

Monday 29th July

Today was such a good day…

I Got in, had a catch up with the receptionist as she is now back for the week and I am back onto competition data entry, however it took me 10 minutes to open the document as the computer I was using converted it to numbers! I hate this programme, its so slow!

Today I went for it, if you don’t ask you will never get! I seen the editor who I was working with for the promotion whilst she had a spare minute and asked her for feedback about my writing as although I thought the emails were good she always updated them with tweeks before confirming to me that they were ok to send. Because she tweeked them, this time it didn’t discourage me, in fact it encouraged me to understand where I was going wrong. One thing she did say was as I dealt with it by myself on Friday, she said to handover a conclusion to her so that she knew at what stage the promotion was at so I sent her an email with the updates. (On my part it was stupid not to think of this or even see that common knowledge would say to do this) She said that writing professionally just comes with practice but she did say to perhaps think of taking a creative writing seminar course although expensive, it would look incredibly good on my CV. As the PA would maybe know any contacts with this she said she would look into it for me and also gave me a very good website as a starting point within my city, which I will check out!

I aspire to reach the top of work hierarchy like my CEO at my placement and today I finally got my chance to ask her about how she got to where she is. I see her as being the ultimate student as, as soon as she finished university she got a job straight away and said to  me as I’m interested in the editorial side of the magazine to ask the editors to do a try out piece. This would be such an achievement for me if I write it and they were to like it!

Extra Tasks:

I helped with handing out post as the receptionist was busy due to catching up on her emails etc

I had to re-print a document for the finance director which involved scanning it, printing it,  binding it and emailing it over as a PDF.

I also emailed the PA my holiday dates in which I won’t be available during September as I’m going on holiday… yay!

More Magazine Issue 1st October 2012

This post took me quite a while to write as this More issue was jam packed with 2 articles, one was about freshers and the other was how drinking alcohol and how it can effect your career…

I think when at university or aspiring for a career, it is important to have a good time but also to know when not to cross the line! I didn’t have the whole freshers experience, in my 1st year at university I lived at home and didn’t make many friends to be able to go out with all the time, in my 2nd year, I lived with 6 boys and my loan didn’t come in until Christmas, so until then I was pretty skint! I  do think that I kind of compressed all the nights into one because at my Christmas house party, I was completely smashed, that night I bought rounds for all my roommates and I live with 7 people!! I cannot put in words the dreaded feeling I had to check my balance the morning after…

With Facebook being the biggest social network at the moment, it would be wise to be 100% careful what you post online when your out and about, I do post when I go out and have a good time because we are all entitled to it even if you party crazy every weekend it makes a bad name for yourself. So the key to it all is MODERATION.

My lecturer once told me a story about a class having a guest speaker who was an employer in the media industry, however what the employer had done before hand was he searched them all on Twitter. When in the class he asked if a ‘So & So’ was here and said to him you tweeted, ‘Urghh journalism is so boring’ ‘Tell me why I should hire you?’

Imagine that?!?! It  really made me think twice what I post online!

Boys will be immature, inbetweeners types:

Expect a weird flatmate:

Girls can make the first move:

You won’t starve, Honest:

You’ll Miss Mum. A Lot:

This is so true I always skype my sister as I’m super close with her and it feels like I never moved out 🙂

Things to do in the first term:

Your boss may be picking up the bar tab but don’t let them see you drunk and disorderly…

Cheeky glass of vino after work? You can’t beat it for a bit of stress relief even if our booze study suggest less and less of you are doing it regularly. But what some of us are guilty of is confusing after work drinks with the kind of night out you might have on a Saturday with your girlfriends.

I’m not saying you can’t mix your work with a bit of pleasure after all, you don’t want to be known as the boring new girl who never comes out to play after hours. But it’s when you add in a different kind of mixer to the office drinks – say a double vodka and coke – that there are certain things that you need to remember too…

When it comes to clinking the glasses with your colleagues after hours, there’s a simple rule you need to always bear in mind: never get staggeringly drunk at a work event. This still applies even if you’re friends with all your workmates. It can be a tricky rule to stick to when the drinks are free-flowing and the boss is picking up the bill, but trust me on this – being drunk and all the antics that comes with it is not a good luck in front of the boss. Ever.

Never be the last person standing. By all means go to the party and have a great time but don’t feel the need to hang around till the very end. You want to have a clear head for the next day in the office and you also want to be someone who has more in their life than just work.

When it comes to spying a hottie in the office, leave Andy in accounts well alone. Keep the office romance fantasies in your head and resist the urge to act out any of your feelings. If that sounds too harsh, and you actually have genuine feelings about a co-worker, arrange to meet them outside of the office away from your other colleagues and see how things go from there. Getting involved with someone senior or someone you work with closely nearly always causes problems.

If you have a ‘plus one’ for the party and you decide to take your boyfriend along, try to keep your hands to yourself when your colleagues are around. Otherwise your PDA’s may end up being the topic of conversation the next day at the photocopier.

When it comes to work chat over a few glasses, don’t let your lips get the better of you and cross a line. You may feel it’s a great opportunity to bring up issues in the workplace in an informal setting, but you may end up seriously offending someone.

It may seem like a great idea to show everyone your side splits party trick after a bottle or two down the pub, but with iPhones attached to everyone’s hand, it might come back to haunt you the next day

(Please Note: The information is from the More Magazine articles ‘Uni: Your Survival Guide By Russell Howard’ & ‘Don’t let Booze lead to work blues’  in Issue 1st October 2012, I did not write this!)
